Learnerships:

    Learners on learning programs learn through attending training at the provider and receive on-the-job training at the employer.

    Learners (18.1) who are permanently employed remain on their existing employment contracts. Unemployed learners (18.2) sign an employment contract based on the BCEA - Sectoral Determination No. 5.

    A learnership is a work-based learning programme that gives the learner the opportunity to work while studying towards a nationally NQF registered qualification.

    Learnerships were introduced by government to help upskill learners and prepare them for the workplace and are directly related to an occupation or field of work.

    HR & Skills Market offer a learnership service aimed at assisting organisations with the implementation and management of HR Learnership by offering coaching and mentoring. A mentor would be in a position to assist the learnership candidate on a one-on-one basis.

Internships:

    Internships are intended to fast track skills to offer needed work experience to unemployed graduates and to empower graduates with practical knowledge commensurate with their qualification. An internship focuses on practical training; the employer determines the duration and content of the internship so it can vary greatly and the specific outcomes are not defined or regulated as in the case of learnerships. Internships are ideal for graduates or those with tertiary qualifications but who lack experience. The primary benefit for the graduate learner includes obtaining “real world” workplace experience. An internship is a programme designed to give University and FET College graduates an opportunity to extend their academic qualifications through structured workplace exposure and specialised training. Participants are placed on a full-time basis for a period of eight to twelve months in stakeholder companies and government organisations. The purpose of this is to provide the learner with workplace experience that builds on the qualification.
